Dr. Bill Tyrrell is a 1992 graduate of the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) at Virginia Tech. After graduation, he spent four years in small animal practice in Northern Virginia, where he became fascinated with cardiology and echocardiography. He then began a cardiology residency program at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his residency credentials with Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates (now CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets) and achieved Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in the College of Cardiology in 1999. He was a co-founder and helped expand CVCA to its present 29 plus locations across the country. He presently serves as Co-Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of CVCA and spends a good deal of his time traveling from office to office now. When seeing in-office appointments, Dr. Tyrrell is usually working out of either the Leesburg, VA or Frederick, MD locations.

In February of 2010, he was elected President of the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and served on its Board of Directors for over 12 years. He spent two years as Virginia’s alternate delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association’s House of Delegates. He is a past President of the Northern Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and the Virginia Tech (VA MD College of Veterinary Medicine/VMCVM) Veterinary School Alumni Society. He has lectured nationally at the ACVIM Forum, VMX, AVMA National Convention, VVMA Virginia Veterinary Conference, and the PVMA Keystone meeting. Bill is the past chair of ACVIM Marketing and Communications Committee (2016-2018) and the ACVIM Cardiology Residency Training Committee (2021). He is presently the Treasurer of the ACVIM and serves on the ACVIM Executive Board and Board of Regents along with chairing the Dean’s Advisory Council at the VMCVM. Bill was also recently appointed to the Inova Loudoun Hospital Foundation board of directors.

Dr. Tyrrell was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in 2003 by the VA Tech Alumni Association. In 2015, he was recognized by the VVMA as the Distinguished Virginia Veterinarian of 2015 and in August of 2019, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the VA MD College of Veterinary Medicine.

Bill’s main research interest lies in giant breed cardiomyopathy in both the Irish Wolfhound (IWH) and Great Dane. He has worked with the Irish Wolfhound Foundation and the Great Dane Club of America for the past 20 years or so. His work with Irish Wolfhounds has been published in both the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the Journal of Canine Genetics and Epidemiology.

Dr. Tyrrell lives in Leesburg, Virginia with his wife, Jen, and one remaining Maine Coon cat. He has two adult daughters, one in NYC and the other at UPenn. In his rare personal time he enjoys golfing, fishing, wine collecting, and cheering on the Hokies.
